First haircuts
The saturday before Easter we hit a milestone...kind of. Solomon had his first haircut. It was very bittersweet process for me, a kind of tumultuous one for Solomon and I'm sure that David was savoring the sweet taste of victory. See, Solomon has this adorable strawberry blonde hair that, when it's longer, curls in these cute spirals. He looks positively angelic...not that any of us that know him are fooled by it, but it's pretty cute. I was very reluctant to cut his hair, afraid that we'd lose all those curls. I thought that David wanted it cut short...really short, because every time we discussed it and I asked how short do you want it, he'd say,"as short as you'll let it get cut." I was picturin
g the nasty barber man taking a set of clippers to my sons head while the poor kid sat in hysterics. NOT what I was going to jump on board with. As it turn
s out David and I were on the same page with what we wanted in a haircut for Solly. We took Solomon to the barber that David goes to, at the same time as David's appointment. We were hoping that watching Daddy get his hair cut would help ease things a bit. Solomon, however, was way more interested in running around the barber shop and eating cocoa puffs than in watching David. He was very excited to climb into the chair and sit by himself, for all of about 5 minutes. Then the barber (Larry) put the cape around his neck and Solomon thought that was just not ok. He was mad about it the whole time. He looked like such a big boy sitting there all by himself. Larry sprayed his hair with water and at the first squirt (to the back of the head) Solomon turned around and glared at
the water bottle. At the first clip of hair he kind of got a little nervous and we decided after about 5 minutes of wiggling that it would be better for Solomon to sit on David's lap for his haircut.
This went well for a little while, and then Solomon got upset because he had to sit still and he couldn't get out from under the darned cape.
Needless to say it was really hard to watch without wanting to laugh and cry at the same time. Over all Solomon did a great job. As long as he was entertained by books and cell phones h
e was ok, but the second he got bored he would break down and fuss. It really wasn't as traumatic as I thought it would be. Larry did a great job and showed a LOT of patience with Solly, seeing as Solly didn't think it mattered if he sat still or not. I w
as pretty impressed, he did it all with scissors and didn't cut anything but hair! So I stood there snapping pictures and entertaining the kiddo as I watched the baby fade away and a little boy emerged. All in all he looks really cute, we cut his hair short enough that he looks like a boy, and not a shaggy dog. But it's still long enough that he kept his curls. Though now instead of spirals in front he has this little mane...it kind of flips up and back and frames his face. David and I agree that he could be Peter Pan! Of course I took like 30 pictures and a video and I saved a few of his curls for his baby book and my locket. David enjoys looking at Solomon's face, I am amazed that a haircut could free so much "little boy" in Solly and I'm sure Solomon is enjoying the fact that we don't have to comb his hair as often.
